corduroy skirts are a sin

ha! gotta love the gays for their keen fashion sense. ;)

water bottles!

remember to bring along your own reusable, refillable water bottle when you're out and about ppl. it's very simple and a truly effective way to help the environment by helping to keep extra waste out of landfills!

you don't want to live surrounded by TRASH do you?

on top of that, it's soooooo much cheaper, and cuter if you get a pretty bottle.

jersey shore at fashion week???

so not fair... i need to be on some crap reality show, then i could be front row at fashion week...

from ny post's page six:

Simon Doonan is psyched to see the "Jersey Shore" cast at the fashion shows. "The thing that's so fabulous about them is their complete and utter lack of pretension. That is a much needed ingredient of Fashion Week," the Barneys creative ddirector said. "It would be fun to see JWoww wearing Alexander Wang, or doing a Rodarte thing," he said."Snooki could do a Proenza Schouler something something. I could see Ronnie [Ortiz-Magro] wearing John Bartlett, having a super-butch look. And it would be really fun to put Mike 'The Situation' in a Thom Brown suit, but the short pants would probably get stuck on his calves." Doonan and partner Jonathan Adler ran into Paul "DJ Pauly D" DelVecchio and Vinnie Giordano at the Knicks Bowl charity event at Chelsea Piers the other night.

mixtape: songs designers should use on the runway this week

from steff yotka @ fashionista

1. Mogwai – Like Herod
If a designer is going for major impact, this is the song. While it starts out understated and quiet, the crescendo is so dramatic that the first time I heard it my heart literally stopped. I only wish there were Rodarte dresses walking during it…. Kate and Laura, think about it.
2. Radiohead – These Are My Twisted Words
Runway music is about having the newest, coolest song, and what’s cooler than Radiohead’s most recent playing behind your collection? “These Are My Twisted Words” is so new, it’s not even on an album yet. Alex Wang, Radiohead’s edgiest tunes are sure to enhance your Wall Street-inspired collection. And even better, you can download the song for free by clicking the above link.
3. Pomegranates – Thunder Meadow
Happy, pop-y, catchy: These are all adjectives that could be used to describe at least 85% of the songs you’ll hear at a fashion show. That’s why “Thunder Meadow” is so perfect for a fun show like Charlotte Ronson or The Blonds. Not to mention it will be incredibly hard to get out of your head.
4. So Percussion – White
Experimental percussion might not be on top of everyone’s play list, but New York quartet So Percussion makes symphonies out of staplers, marimbas, and toy pianos that are captivating and beautiful. “White” evokes the heavenly aura that Marc Jacobs usually goes for with its Brian Eno arranged music.
5. Sonic Youth – Antenna
Speaking of Marc Jacobs, his favorite’s new album “The Eternal” is full of tracks worthy of the runway. From its release, “Antenna” stood out from the rest with its rises and falls; the perfect beat to play alongside Natasha’s stomping stride.
6. Charlotte Gainsbourg – Dandelion
Charlotte Gainsbourg is a fashion darling. Fresh off of her Balenciaga ads, we think her song “Dandelion” is just the tune to play on Balenciaga’s runway. It exudes chic like no other song, and is bound to be immediately loved by editors and models alike.
7. Alphabeat – Boyfriend
Boyfriend is just another song following the happy, popular formula, but we think Alphabeat could be the new MGMT for FW10. Alphabeat has the groove, kitsch, and joy to make it on all the major runways. And it’s fun to sing along to, meaning it’ll have all the models dancing backstage.
Just about everyone will agree that Amelie is an incredible film. There’s no denying that  Yann Tiersen’s soundtrack helped make the movie the enchanting, captivating work of art it is. “Comptine d’un autre été: L’après-midi” is a beautiful piano song that would bring out the best of Dior, John Galliano, or Lanvin. Basically any Parisian label.
9. Animal Collective – Fireworks
There’s always some Animal Collective at the cool kids’ shows in New York, but we’d love to hear more. The sound gets the audience’s attention, but it’s not distracting enough to take away form the clothes. And while Merriweather Post Pavillion is AC’s newest album, “Fireworks” will always be our favorite AC song.
10. The Sword – Freya
This one holds a special place in our hearts. Sure, there are plenty of songs that share a name with a famous model, but no song, nor any model, is quite as intense, headbanging, or truly metal as The Sword’s “Freya” or Freja Beha Erichsen herself. This song made the list because we’re all hoping that some designer catches on and switches to “Freya” right as the other Freja walks the runway. We think she’s deserving of a theme song, no?

brilliant. apparently they are thinking about doing a lady gaga song next.

RIP lee alexander mcqueen

devastating news in the fashion world... alexander mcqueen committed suicide only days after his beloved mother's death. his fashion show that was scheduled for today was cancelled and i'm wondering what will become of his line for target.

Alexandra Shulman, editor of [British] Vogue, said: 'Lee McQueen influenced a whole generation of designers. His brilliant imagination knew no bounds as he conjured up collection after collection of extraordinary designs.

'At one level, he was a master of the fantastic, creating astounding fashion shows that mixed design, technology and performance and on another he was a modern-day genius whose gothic aesthetic was adopted by women the world over. His death is the hugest loss to anyone who knew him and for very many who didn't.'

AD LOVE: balenciaga

Balenciaga’s just released their first fragrance in twelve years, Balenciaga Paris.
The scent, which is powdery, light, and perfect for someone who doesn’t want to smell like they’re wearing perfume, launches at Bergdorf Goodman on the 15th.
We expect Charlotte Gainsbourg’s Steven Meisel-shot campaign to pop up everywhere this spring, but for now,
you can watch Nicolas Ghesquière talk about his process. The bottle, which will remain the same when they roll out new scents, is inspired by the classic Balenciaga silhouette. Ghesquière imagines a woman setting it down amongst her things to create an Irving Penn-like still life and he chose Charlotte for her “oddity…and bizarre beauty.”

Images of the original Balenciaga boutique on Avenue George V pop up in the video, as well as the original perfume bottle (one of which I happened to find in Beirut over the holidays — now I know it’s from 1947) and the rest of Ghesquière’s inspiration.
If you ever though fragrance was an afterthought, this should change your mind.

Brazilian fashion website Finissimo held its fourth annual National Underwear Day on Tuesday, sending scantily clad models to bus stations, malls and parading down the street in a celebration of...well, underwear. Style consultant and curator Maria Thereza Laudares explained, "The aim of the National Underwear Day is to make people recognize the importance of these garments left unseen, but which are the first to be put on and the last to be taken off."

very important!!!

LADIES AND GENTS, PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE GLOBAL AIDS CRISIS IS STILL IN EFFECT AND IF YOU THINK THE WORD "GLOBAL" DOESN'T INCLUDE YOU, YOU CAN CALL IT THE LOCAL AIDS CRISIS.

i'll admit, AIDS is not something i think about on a regular basis... however, thanks to mac's viva glam campaign, i've become re-aware.

the newest statistics show that AIDS is not a "gay" disease. in fact, the ppl most at risk are straight women ages 17-24 and 39-60. (just fyi, that's you.)

so, i suggest you listen to the mac viva glam spokespeople, who happen to be the amazing cyndi lauper and lady gaga, take a hint, support the cause, but the lipstick, spread the word.

first openly gay man recommended for federal judge

Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York is recommending that President Obama nominate an openly gay man to serve as a federal judge for the first time. Daniel Alter has been designated by the senator for the U.S. district court for the southern district of New York, subject to Senate confirmation.

Schumer noted the historic nature of the recommendation in a statement, according to
DC Agenda.

“His outstanding leadership skills, his commitment to justice, and his extensive experience make him an exceptional choice for a position on the federal bench,” said Schumer. “I’m proud to nominate Daniel Alter. Period. But I am equally proud to nominate him because he is a history-maker who will be the first openly gay male judge in American history.”

Schumer is the senior senator from New York. Presidents traditionally follow the judicial nomination recommendations of the senior senator from the state where this is a vacancy.

According to
DC Agenda, Alter is a graduate of Columbia College and Yale Law School. His experience includes six years as an assistant U.S. attorney for the southern district of New York and service as national director of the Anti-Defamation League.

In 1994, President Bill Clinton appointed Deborah Batts, an out lesbian, to serve as federal judge for the U.S. district court of the southern district of New York.

The Alter recommendation arrives as the
San Francisco Chronicle reported this week that Judge Vaughn Walker of the U.S. district court for the northern district of California, who is presiding over the Proposition 8 trial, is gay. Walker has not commented on the report.

Exposed: Naked Body Scanner Images Of Film Star Printed, Circulated By Airport Staff

Authorities’ claim that virtual strip search pictures immediately destroyed proven fraudulent – use of devices needs to be halted now.
Claims on behalf of authorities that naked body scanner images are immediately destroyed after passengers pass through new x-ray backscatter devices have been proven fraudulent after it was revealed that naked images of Indian film star Shahrukh Khan were printed out and circulated by airport staff at Heathrow in London.
UK Transport Secretary Lord Adonis said last week that the images produced by the scanners were deleted “immediately” and airport staff carrying out the procedure are fully trained and supervised.
“It is very important to stress that the images which are captured by body scanners are immediately deleted after the passenger has gone through the body scanner,” Adonis told the London Evening Standard.
Adonis was forced to address privacy concerns following reports that the images produced by the scanners broke child pornography laws in the UK. When the scanners were first introduced, it was also speculated that images of famous people would be ripe for abuse as the pictures produced by the devices make genitals “eerily visible” according to journalists who have investigated trials of the technology.
However, the Transport Secretary’s assurances were demolished after it was revealed on the BBC’s Jonathan Ross show Friday that Indian actor Shahrukh Khan had passed through a body scan and later had the image of his naked body printed out and circulated by Heathrow security staff.
“I was in London recently going through the airport and these new machines have come up, the body scans. You’ve got to see them. It makes you embarrassed – if you’re not well endowed,” said Khan, referring to how the scans produce clear images of a person’s genitals.
“You walk into the machine and everything – the whole outline of your body – comes out,” he said.
“I was a little scared. Something happens [inside the scans], and I came out. Then I saw these girls – they had these printouts. I looked at them. I thought they were some forms you had to fill. I said ‘give them to me’ – and you could see everything inside. So I autographed them for them,” stated Khan.
The story was carried by Yahoo News under the headline “Shah Rukh signs off sexy body-scan printouts at Heathrow”.
Khan’s reference to “girls” with printouts of his naked body scan can only refer to female airport security staff responsible for processing the images produced by the scanners, “professionals” who are supposed to instantly delete the images, according to Lord Adonis.
The revelation that airport security staff are completely abusing any notion of the professionalism promised by authorities by printing out and circulating images of naked body scans should set alarm bells ringing, especially in light of the fact that such images of minors break child pornography laws. British authorities have made it mandatory for travelers to submit to the naked body scanners when asked and have overturned previous rules that prevented under 18’s from passing through the devices.
Within days of the devices being introduced at Heathrow, staff have abused their professionalism and printed out naked scans of a famous actor for their own titillation.
We were promised all along that the body scanners “increased privacy” because they were only accessible to a single staff member who had no personal contact with the passenger taking the scan, in addition to the assurance that the images could not be saved and were instantly deleted. It in fact turns out that airport staff have been saving, printing and circulating naked body scans in complete violation of these supposed guarantees.
Furthermore, we were told that the identity of the person undergoing the virtual strip search would also be kept private. The fact that Heathrow employees must have known that the actor was about to take the body scan in order to print out copies of the image also proves this claim to be a total fallacy.
The abuse of the naked body scan images in this instance is a total violation of every data protection law in the UK. Far from treating the story in a comical manner, Khan should be filing a very expensive lawsuit and preparing for a successful and lucrative outcome.
In the meantime, the revelation that the naked body scanner images are being freely printed out and circulated by airport security staff should prove to be the death knell for plans on behalf of governments worldwide to institute the scanners on a widespread basis.
Courts have consistently found that strip searches are only legal when performed on a person who has already been found guilty of a crime or on arrestees pending trial where a reasonable suspicion has to exist that they are carrying a weapon. Subjecting masses of people to blanket strip searches in airports reverses the very notion of innocent until proven guilty.
Barring people from flying and essentially treating them like terrorists for refusing to be humiliated by the virtual strip search is a clear breach of the basic human right of freedom of movement. Security experts agree that such scanners would not even have stopped the incident that has been exploited to justify their widespread introduction – the Christmas Day underwear bomber.
Not only have the scanners proven to be a total violation of privacy, but major international radiation safety groups are now warning of the health risks they pose.
Despite governments claiming that backscatter x-ray systems produce radiation too low to pose a threat, the Inter-Agency Committee on Radiation Safety concluded in their report that governments must justify the use of the scanners and that a more accurate assessment of the health risks is needed.
Pregnant women and children should not be subject to scanning, according to the report, adding that governments should consider “other techniques to achieve the same end without the use of ionizing radiation.”
“The Committee cited the IAEA’s 1996 Basic Safety Standards agreement, drafted over three decades, that protects people from radiation. Frequent exposure to low doses of radiation can lead to cancer and birth defects, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,”reported Bloomberg.

ALT fashion on ANTM

from: fashionista.com Vogue editor at-large André Leon Talley will wear a different custom-made Rucci cloak on each episode of America's Next Top Model Cycle 14, set to premiere March 10 on the CW.
The cloaks, which range in color and fabric but not in shape, were inspired by 17th-century Edo samurai tunics.
Will Rucci--who has long been praised for his high-sewing skills but rejected by much of the fashion media because of his unwillingness to follow current trends--finally get his chance to shine? We hope so.

really neat felted soap

how neat is this stuff?!

The last time you lathered up with a hirsute showering buddy, you felt far from clean.
Wash away that lingering grossness with a new fuzzy friend: Fiat Luxe’s felted soap.
Wrapped in naturally antifungal wool, the fragrant bathing beauties act as cleansing agent and washcloth in one.
Energize with hand-grated amber resin from India, soothe skin with the vibrant calendula citrus blend, or refresh your senses with lavender buds.
As you scrub, the felt magically shrinks along with the soap, reshaping the miniature works of art. Once you’ve whittled your way down, simply slit the colorful casing and insert a new bar.
The result?
Sudsy balls you can’t wait to get your hands on.
